I know, I know. This isn't an anime. But for an American cartoon, it's as good as it gets. I love the Avatar series so when I heard about the spin-off, I was pretty excited. I immediately downloaded the first two episodes on itunes! Although, the TV series is not due to air until April 14th on Nickelodeon.
The Legend of Korra fallows the original series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Set in the Avatar universe, it takes place 70 years after the original series arc, and focuses on Korra, the new Avatar.
|She is the avatar! You've gotta deal with it! >.<|
I just totally spoiled two lines for you right there . . .
It starts off pretty cute and funny as we get introduced to our main heroine. Unlike Aang, who began his journey having mastered only one element, Korra mastered three. It is no coincidence that the only element she is missing is air. Like Aang, she shares that same "free spirited" attitude. However, there are more differences between the series that I can count.
The first thing I noticed was the change of time. Aang has passed and a new generation of the Avatar has begun. Electricity, air crafts, cars, and industrialized cities are just a few of the things that came along with the shift. There was a nice scene where Korra had to figure her way around the big city on top of her polar bear dog. The setting may have changed, but it gives you an idea of who Korra is. From the looks of it, she's just a small town girl.
Another change was portrayed within the cast. With Katara being the only pre-existing character, a new set of faces arose . . . well, more like the offspring of these pre-existing characters XD. We get introduced to Tenzin, Korra's current air master and son of Katara, along with his family and his mini set of airbenders. Even Toph's daughter makes an appearance as the Chief of Police of Republic City. We will probably be seeing more offspring throughout the series. We are missing Sokka's and Zuko's kids! I bet they are good looking. ;)
Although, despite the new cast, I can't help but look at them and wonder who it is they are replacing. For starters, Korra is the new Aang, Bolin is the new Sokka(just not as funny), and Mako is the new Katara even though he relates more with Zuko's aloof attitude - he is no doubt Korra's love interest.
|Even Appa gets replaced!|
Korra also looks a lot like Katara . . . in an older way. For those of you who immediately shipped Katara and Zuko together well you're in luck! I'll settle for Korra and Mako. But let's move on to something a little more interesting . . .
You can't have a good story without a solid plot and it looks like this series took a more political route. Words like "equalists" and "opposition" come to mind. Instead of restoring balance in the world between the four elements, Korra has a new set of problems between benders and non-benders. Oppressed vs Oppressors . . . something like this was bound to happen.
I look forward to the silly comedy and the newly found plot. As for the action . . . it is there. Even the music is good. It compliments the setting really well. Will definitely watch! I just won't be covering this series. Not that I don't want to, but there are so many other series I will be keeping up with this season - I may not have the stamina.
