Introducing itself as a mystery series, the anime follows a very storytelling theme - similar to the way one would tell scary stories in the dark during Halloween. Except, this anime offers a numerous amount of stories that fall more along the lines of the mystery genre for you to solve. It just makes it creepier knowing that these stories all revolve around the same town.
One of the best things about this anime is that it presents its tales through a series of arcs (that don't normally last more than 3 episodes), so you are always given something new to witness. It also gives you a bit more freedom to stop and take a break after every arc. That way, you can always pick back up again where you left off - if, or whenever you're in the mood for a little scare. Higurashi has plenty of ambiance to keep you on your toes, either way. Especially when a person or two begins to lose their mind. But don't worry, I don't think you'll lose your mind in the process. Let's just hope you contain a certain amount when it concerns "level headed-ness."
